Research and Development, Managing Intellectual Property
The course aims to provide students with an understanding of Intellectual Property (IP) Management, IP commercialisation and IP protection. The course will provide students with an understanding of the commercial benefits of IP protection and the hidden value, which this provides enterprises.
Knowledge and awareness of the skills required for early identification and protection of project IP developed in early stage Research and Development (R&D) projects will be presented. The course will involve practical examples of successfully commercialised technologies and how companies use IP to establish a unique position in the market place.
The course will also involve specialist lectures by industry practitioners and live case studies.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Knowledge in identification and management of Intellectual property derived from innovation and R&D within enterprises
2. Introductory knowledge of Intellectual property types and the patent process as it relates to products and technologies and how to protect intellectual property.
3. Ability to assess the commercial benefits and value of project R&D through market and competitor analysis.
4. Identification of the commercial pathway for R&D projects. Ways to exploit your patented research outcome via Licensing or Start-up company structure.
