Introduces some basic principles of engineering mechanics in as simple a manner as possible. The course covers a basic introduction to both statics and dynamics. Emphasis is placed upon the gaining of real understanding of the laws and principles of mechanics.

Objectives At the end of the course the student will have:

- a basic understanding of the laws and principles of mechanisms.
- the ability to analyse and solve simple problems in mechanics.
- an understanding of the assumptions and limitations of the approach used.
Content Part 1 - Statics
- Basic assumptions of theory of structures: ideal materials, small deflections.
- Redundancy, stability.
- Stress, strain, extension of bars.
- Compatibility.
- Bending Moment and Shear Force diagrams for simple beams.
- Properties of areas.
- Stresses due to bending: normal and shear.
- Column buckling.
- Hydrostatics.

Part 2 - Dynamics
- Kinematics and Kinetics in Cartesian, normal, tangential, and polar coordinate systems.
- Rectilinear and curvilinear motion.
- Newton's laws of motion.
- Friction.
- Work and energy.
- Conservative systems.
- Impulse and momentum.
