FILM4040 is studied in conjunction with FILM4010, FILM4020, and FILM4030 which together comprise the full Film Honours program. The Honours program is the culmination of undergraduate teaching in the discipline of Film, Media and Cultural Studies. It provides for students who have distinguished themselves in this area at 1000-3000 level and wish to explore advanced approaches in the context of detailed studies. FILM4040 builds on undergraduate study by providing an opportunity to conduct a piece of research designed by the student, under the supervision of a member of staff.
| Objectives | At the end of this course students will be able to: * Combine method and theory in a way that demonstrates their interrelatedness and commonalities, * Provide evidence of an understanding of a field of study, * Demonstrate a contribution to the knowledge in the field, * Demonstrate an understanding of the conventions of scientific writing, * Discuss findings, draw out main achievements and explain results, * Draw links between research aims, findings and the literature, * Demonstrate an awareness of "ethics" in relation to research. |

| Content | In FILM4040 students are required write up a significant piece of original research as a minor thesis demonstrating the ability to analyse and reflect upon a range of source material relating to a discrete area of film or cinema, constructing a coherent scholarly argument, and making an original contribution to knowledge on the topic. | ||
