The City in Film

The course will develop students' knowledge of the impact of the modern metropolis on culture and society by examining representation of European and American cities in film.

Objectives
1. Comprehension of English and foreign-language film.

2. Critical analysis of cinematic representation and argumentation.

3. Understanding of historical, social and cultural movements associated with these films.

4. Development of communication skills through discussion and writing about films and theories related to them.

5. Independent research using secondary literature related to the prescribed films.
Content
The course looks at the impact of the modern industrial city on Western culture and how this impact is expressed in film. The course will cover notions and imagings of place, time and change in relation to specific urban locations such as Berlin, Paris and Los Angeles. Discussion will be conducted within the overarching framework of the socio-historical situation in Europe and the USA, although other issues (aesthetic, thematic, rhetorical) will also be covered.

FILM3006 The City in Film, and FILM3092 Berlin: Metropolis of Film.
Transition
Students who have successfully completed FILM3006 The City in Film or FILM3092 Berlin: Metropolis of Film, may not enrol into FMCS3500 The City in Film.

As all films shown will be in English or have English subtitles, no knowledge of foreign languages is necessary. No previous knowledge of European history, geography, society or economics is assumed.
