This course examines film, media and culture within the context of the culture industries. Culture industries are a key driver for economic growth in Australia and internationally. This course will review and extend students’ understandings of: the culture and creative industries historically and in the contemporary period; the shifting relationship between culture and economic value; the complex debates regarding the place of the global culture industries in neo-liberal governance; as well as engaging in cutting edge analyses of culture itself and the application of appropriate methods of research in the area, drawing on a range of perspectives. The course offers students a transition from the study of film media and culture, to a career involving the culture industries.
ObjectivesOn completion of this course students will be able to: • Discuss, in depth, the relationship between the media and the culture in which it operates. • Analyse media products and cultural texts, and devise creative solutions to research problems. • Research culture industries, demonstrating skills in locating and evaluating information, synthesising and drawing conclusions, and communicating the results across a range of forms. • Respond to the complex, competing issues involved in teamwork, cultural research, and media analysis with a professional disposition, intercultural awareness and an ethical stance. | |
ContentWhile the learning activities in a particular semester will take account of student interests and staff expertise, course topics may include: 1. Careers in the culture industries 2. Project management 3. Research design 4. Theoretical frameworks for the analysis of the culture industries 5. Methodological approaches to the study of the culture industries 6. Case studies of historical and contemporary culture and creative industries 7. Field trips and/or study tours to observe professional, industry, or creative settings. 8. Writing for specific contexts: e.g. white papers, blogs, wikis, reports, scholarly articles. | |
