This course will introduce students to key principals and topics in biochemistry, physiology, psychology and cognitive science. It will form the basis for subsequent study in a range of health and allied health science disciplines, but is also relevant to students wishing to improve their understanding of science in general. Topics include biochemistry, metabolism and nutrition, physiology, pathology, psychology and cognitive development. The course is particularly valuable to students intending to study science, biomedical science, psychology, speech pathology, occupational therapy, oral health, medical radiation science, nursing and midwifery.

Objectives On successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate:
1. An understanding of key concepts in biochemistry, physiology, psychology and cognitive science.
2. An ability to understand and use scientific terminology.
3. The application of critical thinking to address science-based problems.
4. The ability to synthesise information and key concepts to address an issue.
Content This course will cover:
1. Biochemistry – atoms; elements; bonding; chemical reactions; biomolecules; DNA
2. Metabolism and nutrition; pathology and disease
3. Cells, tissues and organs; nervous and neuroendocrine systems
4. Cognitive development; psychological basis of behaviour
5. Mental health; neuropathology
