# Introductory Mathematics

This course is an introductory mathematics course which will cover basic skills in numeracy, algebra, linear function, graphing, probability and statistics. The course aims to provide a sound foundation in basic mathematical skills and an introduction to their application to problem solving.

Recommended for degrees in Primary Teaching, Nursing, Midwifery, Construction Management, Teaching (Secondary)/Technology, Teaching (Secondary)/Health & PE, Design (Architecture) and Social Work.

##### Objectives
* Students will be proficient in their understanding of appropriate mathematical techniques when commencing undergraduate study.

* Students will display competency, working individually and in groups.

*Students will have acquired critical reasoning and problem solving skills in order to solve mathematical problems.
##### Content
EPMATH303 may include the following topics:
1. Numeracy: order of operation, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, rates, directed numbers, scientific notation, scientific calculator.
2. Algebra: simplification, evaluation, expansion, factorization, solving linear equations, solving linear inequations, using formulae, interpreting and solving word problems, rules of indices.
3. Graphing linear relationships: the number plane, the line y = mx + b, gradient, y-intercept, line of best fit, application to other variables with linear relationships.
4. Probability: simple probability, experimental probability, Venn diagrams, contingency tables, tree diagrams and tables
5. Statistics: frequency distribution tables and graphs, sigma notation, measures of central tendency (mean, mode, median), measures of dispersion (range, standard deviation and variance), the normal curve.
