This course requires competence in the algebraic and graphical skills developed in EPMATH153. This course aims to develop the trigonometric and calculus skills necessary for entry to an undergraduate science or mathematics degree and covers the topics of trigonometry, and differential and integral calculus, with some applications in the physical sciences.
| Objectives | The course will develop: 1. trigonometric skills sufficient for the understanding and practice of calculus. 2. an understanding of differentiation, both in theory and practice, and the ability to apply it to real-world problems. 3. an understanding of integration, both in theory and practice, and the ability to apply it to real-world problems. 4. the ability to communicate mathematics, orally and in writing. 5. an understanding and correct use of mathematical notation. 6. the formulation of real-world problems in the language of mathematics, and the ability to solve them. |

| Content | The course covers: 1. trigonometry: sine and cosine rules, graphing trig functions, trig identities. 2. differentiation: definition, derivatives of standard functions, product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, optimisation and other applications. 3. integration: definition, integration by antidifferentiation, integration by substitution, exponential growth and decay, and other applications. |
