This course is an introductory mathematics course which will cover basic skills in numeracy and algebra. The course aims to provide a sound foundation in basic mathematical skills and an introduction to their application to problem-solving.

Recommended for degrees in Primary Teaching, Nursing, Midwifery, Construction Management, Teaching (Secondary)/Technology, Teaching (Secondary)/Health & PE, Design (Architecture) and Social Work.

Objectives * Students will be proficient in their understanding of appropriate mathematical techniques when commencing undergraduate study.
* Students will display competency, working individually and in groups.
* Students will have acquired critical reasoning and problem solving skills in order to solve mathematical problems.
Content The course topics include:
1. Numeracy: order of operation, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, rates, directed numbers, scientific notation, scientific calculator.
2. Algebra: simplification, evaluation, expansion, factorization, using formulae,interpreting and solving word problems, rules of indices.
