Clinical Toxicology: Plants and Animals

Teaches the practical clinical assessment and management of poisoning from common plant and animal toxins. This includes an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of toxin delivery and toxicity.

Objectives On completion, students will:
(a) Understand the principles of risk assessment for assessment for poisonings from plants and animals;
(b) Understand the treatment options for specific toxin exposures.
Content The teaching will be based around clinical problems supported by monographs and key literature. It will specifically deal with Australasian and Asian snake envenoming; Arthropod envenoming, including spiders, scorpions and hymenoptera; Marine envenoming (jellyfish and venomous fish) and marine poisoning (ciguatera, pufferfish and shellfish poisoning). Plant poisoning will include cardiotoxic, neurotoxic and cytotoxic plants, and mushroom poisoning.
