Clinical Toxicology: Industrial and Chemical

Teaches the practical clinical assessment and management of poisoning from common or important chemical agents. This includes an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of toxicity and the psychological, social and economic associations with self poisoning.

Objectives On completion, students will:
(a) Understand the mechanism and principles of toxicity from common and important chemical exposures;
(b) Understand the principles of risk assessment for acute and chronic exposures; and
(c) Understand the treatment options for specific poisonings.
Content Teaching will be based around clinical problems supported by monographs and key literature. It will specifically deal with poisoning from Agrochemicals (Carbamates, Glyphosate, Organochlorines, Organophosphates, Paraquat), Heavy Metals (Arsenic, Lead, Mercury), Environmental Exposures (Cyanide, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Fluoride), Toxic Alcohols (Ethylene Glycol, Methanol).
