Molecular epidemiology covers the application of methods in molecular biology to epidemiology. The main topics covered are molecular association studies, the use of biomarkers and susceptibility genes.

2. To gain a basic understanding of key concepts in Molecular Biology.
3. To gain a detailed understanding of the design and conduct of Molecular Association Studies in Epidemiological Research.
4. To gain a basic understanding of the use of Biomarkers in Epidemiological Research and disease susceptibility in Oncology.
5. To gain a basic understanding of the Technical Considerations in Using Biomarkers in Epidemiological Research.
6. To gain an understanding of the role of Molecular Epidemiology in Infectious Disease outbreaks.
7. To gain an understanding of the Public health implications in molecular epidemiology (e.g. screening).
|Content||This course includes:|
Module 1 - Basic Concepts in Genetics: Meiosis and Mitosis; recombination and crossing over; cytogenetics; fertilisation and development.
Module 2 - Basic Concepts in Molecular Biology: Structure of DNA; restriction endonucleases; restriction fragment length polymorphisms; satellites; variable number tandem repeats; sequencing; polymerase chain reaction.
Module 3 - Molecular Association Studies in Epidemiological Research: Designs of molecular association studies, sources of bias, critical appraisal.
Module 4 - Biomarkers and disease susceptibility in Oncology: Use of biomarkers; susceptibility genes and genetic polymorphisms.
Module 5 - Technical Considerations in Using biomarkers: Content, construct and criterion validity.
Module 6 - Molecular Epidemiology in Infectious Disease: Detection of pathogens; subtyping of isolates; susceptibility to disease; defining host responses to treatment.
Module 7 - Public health implications in molecular epidemiology using molecular epidemiology in screening tests.
