EPHUMA305 Ancient History and Culture introduces students to the history and culture of the ancient civilisations of Greece and Rome at the tertiary level via a coordinated series of lectures, tutorials and audio-visual presentations.
| Objectives | Ancient History & Culture aims for each student to achieve the following objectives: 1.the establishment and development of practical skills in: use of library facilities; the internet and Blackboard; note-taking in class and in private study; organising private study and revision; and time management. 2.the establishment and development of academic skills in: research techniques; utilising source materials (information); writing techniques such as expression and grammar; critical or analytical thinking and writing; expressing ideas and arguments in written and oral form; formal essay presentation; and examination techniques. 3.a basic understanding of the ancient civilisations of Greece and Rome, including knowledge of: events in the specified time periods; the social and political environments of the time; the values of the ancients; important personalities; the use of ancient and modern source materials; and the relevance of the ancient worlds to modern Western society. |

| Content | Ancient History & Culture examines the origin, development and achievements of the two ancient civilisations of Greece and Rome. The course is divided into two equal parts, the first devoted to Greece and the second devoted to Rome. Major topics include: 1.the rise of the city-state (the polis). 2.the Development of Athens and Sparta. 3.the Persian Wars and their aftermath. 4.the era of Alexander the Great. 5.the Establishment of the Roman Republic. 6.the Punic Wars. 7.the Gracchan Crisis. 8.the careers of Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Crassus and Caesar. |
