Social Enquiry 2 employs some conceptual knowledge to examine a range of topics including:
• Gender (how construction of masculinity and femininity varies across time and culture)
• Race/Ethnicity (how people are affected by stereotyping and racial discrimination)
• Health (how inequality has particular effects on health outcomes)
• Media (how ownership and control influences content and how advertisements can be deconstructed)
• Social Research Methods (how social research is carried out in the social sciences)
| Objectives | On successful completion of this course students will develop a sociological way of thinking about social justice issues and social change. This course introduces the student to a range of approaches, concepts and methods that encourage the student to engage their sociological imagination to critically examine aspects of social inequality as they appear in society today. Through these means the students will learn how to take an analytical approach to the study of institutions and social structures that exist in everyday society, in areas such as gender, race & ethnicity, health and media. This course aims to prepare students with the skills to meet the challenges of tertiary study by developing problem solving strategies, the ability to meet course requirements and deadlines, and learning to articulate ideas both orally and in written form. Students will learn library research skills, how to take lecture notes, plan, write and edit an essay. Students will be given opportunities to develop skills for working effectively in groups as well as independently. |
