The role, point of view and responsibility of storytellers will be examined in a range of literary genres and in film. There will be a particular emphasis on the art and language of narratives as they draw upon individual and collective memory, myth and the imagination, within the periods, societies and cultures from which they come.
Students will be introduced to a variety of literary critical approaches appropriate to the study of Literature and Film at tertiary level, and are encouraged to develop the research and essay-writing skills necessary for such study.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course students will develop:
1. A sound knowledge of the structures and techniques used in various forms of literature and film
2. A sound knowledge of the terminology used in the analysis of literature and film, and the ways in which to use it
3. Some understanding of the variety of critical approaches that may be employed in the study of literature and film
4. The ability to develop independent responses to a variety of imaginative texts
5. The skills necessary to think critically and respond appropriately in written form to a variety of fictional texts
6. The skills necessary to write an academic essay.

Content

EPHUMA244 introduces students to the study of narrative and the role of storytelling through a range of texts in different genres (poetry, drama, novel and film). Students will explore the origins, structure, and significance of stories and understand the importance of narratives in our lives. Students will be encouraged to explore the ways in which imaginative texts generate meaning through story (what is told) and discourse (the manner of their telling).
