Introduces students to the history, culture and peoples of ancient Rome, covering the period 753 BC to 44 BC. Major topics include: the establishment of the Roman Republic; the Punic Wars; the Gracchan Crisis; the era of Marius and Sulla; and the careers of Pompey, Crassus and Caesar. Emphasis is placed on the skills needed to succeed at University level, such as the ability to research, take notes, analyse and write essays.

Objectives By the end of EPHUMA239 Ancient History & Culture2: The Romans,the student will:
1. be introduced to and familiar with the study of ancient history at the tertiary level.
2. have a basic understanding of the civilisation of the ancient Romans, including knowledge of: events and important personalities; social and political environments; and the values of the ancients.
3. be able to use ancient and modern source materials in order to appreciate the relevance of ancient Rome to modern Western society.
4. be adept at using: library facilities; the internet and Blackboard; taking notes in lectures; and time management.
5. be practiced in the techniques needed to research, write and present academic assignments, including essays.
6. be familiar with and practiced in the techniques required for effective examination performance.

Required to develop and display practical skills, academic skills and a basic understanding of the ancient civilisation under study via competent use of the appropriate sources and technologies.
Examination: Formal Final examination in the University examination period, 50% Assesses overall proficiency in this course, via demonstration and display of skills and knowledge required to satisfy entry to undergraduate level studies.
