Social Enquiry 1 offers an introduction to the discipline of Sociology, which represents the study of people and cultures in industrial societies. This course begins by exploring historical changes in social, political and economic arrangements of cultural groups which provides a basis for understanding sociological approaches. It will examine the impact of social structure, roles, social functions, social inequality and class, on people's lives as well as what people do when they are interacting on a face-to-face level. Students will learn to develop a sociological imagination to enable them to view society and culture in a way that challenges the taken-for-granted, or commonsense, view of the world. This is an enabling course which provides students with techniques and strategies to prepare them for tertiary study by learning to take a scientific approach to examining social life in contemporary society.
| Objectives | This course introduces the student to a range of sociological concepts and methods which encourage them to develop a sociological way of thinking. They will learn how to examine social issues in a scientific way. Through these means the student will learn to take an analytical approach to the study of institutions and social structures which exist in everyday life. Students will learn library research skills, how to take lecture notes, plan, write and edit an essay. This course prepares students for the challenges of tertiary study: including the ability to work effectively in groups as well as independently; meeting course requirements and deadlines; learning to articulate ideas, both orally and in written form, and to develop problem solving skills. | ||||||||
