Introduction to Linguistics

This course will introduce students to basic linguistic concepts while engaging in a study of how the language works within society. The basic elements of grammar will allow the students to have a working knowledge of the English language. This will enable them to continue with the subject in their teaching courses while providing a sound base for understanding some of the social elements of language and how they are utilized within society.

Objectives On successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate:
1. an understanding of the conceptual similarities of language
2. an understanding of basic theoretical and applied aspects of linguistics
3. an understanding of linguistic and grammatical terminology
4. an awareness of interpersonal and social aspects of language
5. competence in the use of appropriate and relevant technology
Content 1. The nature of human language – What is language? Brain and language.
2. Grammatical aspects of language – Morphology; Syntax; Semantics; Phonology
Replacing Course(s) EPHUMA 249 – Linguistics 2 – 10 units. (In the Newstep program only)
Transition Students who have successfully completed EPHUMA249 will not be eligable to enrol

Examination: Class A test will examine students knowledge of one of four topics. (Course objective 3)
Essays / Written Assignments Short Essay: Students will examine the elements common to all languages (Course objectives 1 and 5)
Essays / Written Assignments Final Essay: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the development and use of Australian English. (Course objectives 2, 4 and 5)
Examination: Formal Students will demonstrate a sound knowledge of the concepts and skills of Linguistics. (Course objectives 1 to 4)
Other: (please specify) Semantics Exercise: Students will be required to clarify sentences and erase any ambiguities. (Course objective 2)
