English for Tertiary Studies II is designed to provide depth and extension of the academic skills studied in EPHUMA140 English for Tertiary Studies I. It seeks to assist both student and teacher to identify and concentrate on the areas of language needed, particularly as a result of outcomes in EPHUMA140 English for Tertiary Studies I. It is designed to enable students to continue to gain confidence and competence in all areas of English; to reinforce the students' knowledge of a variety of English genres, with an emphasis on applying this knowledge in a practical and productive way. The students are encouraged to view their writing as a process of preparation, drafting and editing, and to develop and demonstrate successful research and independent learning skills which are appropriate to their particular area of study at the tertiary level. Students are encouraged to work both individually and in groups.

Objectives Students will:
1. be expected to continue to gain confidence and competence in a range of written, spoken and aural English suitable for the commencement of undergraduate study. In part, students will be expected to develop and demonstrate independent learning skills.
2. gain an increased, comprehensive practical knowledge and application of the variety of academic genres in written and spoken English appropriate to their undergraduate course of study.
3. be expected to continue to read, understand and respond critically to a wide variety of material.
4. continue to develop recognition and synthesis of important and relevant information, enabling the production of objective, cohesive argument in appropriate academic format.
5. develop generic skills necessary for the study of this subject and directly transferable to other subject areas.
6. develop effective speaking and listening skills for use in formal academic contexts as well as less formal contexts and those involving practical application of knowledge, being aware always of the cultural differences implicit in all forms of communication.
7. develop an awareness of the problems inherent in cross-cultural communication (particularly valuable for those students undertaking the Medical and Health Sciences Course).
8. gain confidence in the use of written and oral skills working both individually and in groups.
Content 1. Report Writing: Detailed knowledge of all aspects of various types of report writing including style and format of a report. It covers letters of transmittal, the organisation of material (classification), tables of contents, numbering systems, referencing (revision), the use of appendices, bibliographies etc. This area also incorporates the generic skills emphasised in paraphrase, summary and precis.
2. The Interpretation of Data with particular emphasis on speaking to and writing about diagrams, graphs etc.
3. Essay Writing including exercises associated with the writing of four types of essays, including 'compare and contrast' essays and 'cause and effect' essays. This section of the course also includes emphasis on material dealing with cultural differences, including 'culture shock', cultural differences, NVC etc.
4. Vocabulary Extension including further awareness of the levels and genres of English, further work on colloquial and slang usage and work in the area of interaction in society e.g. greetings, requests, leave-taking, agreement and disagreement etc. Attention is paid to the vocabulary (academic and colloquial) commonly in use in certain professions.
5. Cultural awareness in terms of knowledge of family relationships, social customs etc.
6. Reading skills with particular emphasis on levels of meaning in a text; looking for sub-textual clues; objective and subjective writing.
7. Listening skills with particular emphasis on listening/watching/interpreting videos.
8. Speaking skills and Speechmaking. Further development of this skill in preparation for presentations at university level.
