Ancient History & Culture 1: The Greeks

Introduces students to the history, culture and peoples of Ancient Greece, covering the period 750 BC to 323 BC. Topics include: the rise of the city-state (the polis); Athens; Sparta; the Persian Wars and their aftermath; and the era of Alexander the Great. Emphasis is placed on the skills needed to succeed at the University level, such as the ability to research, take notes, analyse and write essays.

Objectives By the end of EPHUMA139 Ancient History 1: The Greeks the student will:
1. be introduced to and familiar with the study of ancient history at the tertiary level.
2. have a basic understanding of the civilisation of the ancient Greeks, including knowledge of: events and important personalities; social and political environments; and the religion and values of the ancients.
3. be able to use ancient and modern source materials in order to appreciate the relevance of ancient Greeks to modern Western society.
4. be adept at using: library facilities; the internet and Blackboard; taking notes in lectures; and time management.
5. be practiced in the techniques needed to research, write and present academic assignments, including essays.
6. be familiar with and practiced in the techniques required for effective examination performance.
Content * The rise of the Greek city-state (the polis), and its growth into Colonisation, Tyranny and Trade.
* The development of Athens and Sparta.
* The Persian Wars and their aftermath.
* The era of Alexander the Great.
