EPHUMA137 introduces students to the basic dimensions and inequalities of contemporary Australian society. It also outlines the nature and operation of selected social institutions. Emphasis is placed on the skills of note-taking, research, analysis and essay writing that are widely applicable to tertiary study.

Objectives At the end of this course the student will have:
1. become acquainted with the basic dimensions and inequalities of Australian culture and society.
2. been introduced to the study of selected institutions in Australian culture and society.
3. have developed and displayed their knowledge of the content at various points throughout the course.
4. practised effective active listening and note-taking skills in lectures.
5. participated in tutorial presentations and discussions, thereby enhancing their oral literacy skills.
6. practised critical thinking, topic analysis, research, production and presentation of written assignments.
7. been provided with prompt assessment of their written assignments and tests.
8. engaged in examination performance under university conditions.
9. had an opportunity to develop self-discipline, as well as to assess their ability to succeed in tertiary study and to consider pathways in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Content EPHUMA137 Australian Culture and Society covers:
* A course overview, basic terminology, conceptual frameworks and characteristics of Australian culture and society.
* Inequalities including those based on gender, race, and ethnicity, class and age.
* Work on selected social institutions including the family and work.

Examination: Formal 50%
Participate in examination performance under University conditions. Develop and display the knowledge and skills needed to be a successful undergrdauate student at University.
Group/tutorial participation and contribution Develop and display knowledge, critical thinking and written literacy skills through reading in advance and preparing answers to set questions which will be elaborated in the tutorial session (10%). Demonstrate knowledge of the course content. Develop skills needed to be a successful undergraduate student at University. Provide the opportunity to understand and practise the standard of work expected of students.
Presentations - Tutorial One 10 minute oral tutorial presentation (15%) accompanied by an essay (20%) essay plan (5%) and bibliography.
Each student chooses one topic at the start of the course upon which to prepare and present an oral presentation.
Develops knowledge, critical thinking, self-discipline, topic analysis skills, research skills and the ability to locate and evaluate appropriate resources, assignment production and presentation skills, including those of word-processing.
Participation in tutorial presentations and discussions. Enhances oral presentation skills and the ability to work alone and in groups.
