EPHUMA122 Newstep English aims to develop written and oral language skills needed for undergraduate study at university.

Objectives
Students will:
1.develop awareness of construction of key ideas and issues in a variety of texts.
2.develop ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise ideas as represented in factual and fictional texts
3.develop academic skills of close analysis, critical reading and note taking
4.develop capacity for independent research
5.develop ability to construct argument in written and oral form
6.develop academic skills of referencing written work
7.develop ability to apply knowledge and critical skills in an examination setting
Content
This course will provide an introduction to the study of the relationship between context, text and language:

1. Context : Mainly contemporary issues in Australian Society, such as:
a)social, cultural, and ethical issues eg gender, multiculturalism, prejudice
b) issues of identity and landscape

2. Text : Representations of ideas and issues in a variety of texts, both fictional and factual, such as:
a)novel, film, poetry, drama, visual
b)biography,autobiography, journal articles, records

3. Language : The study of language in context, such as:
a)the ways in which texts communicate their ideas and ideologies
b)the language of fact and fiction

4. Academic writing skills and oral presentation skills, including :
a)essay writing skills:the plan, paragraph, topic sentence, referencing etc
b)tutorial presentation skills:presenting and writing a paper
c)basic research skills:how to use the library and develop independent research skills

c) the language of film
d)writers, writing and writing styles
e)structure of argument and analysis,both oral and written
f)syntax, spelling, grammar and vocabulary
