ObjectivesStudents will:
1.develop awareness of construction of key ideas and issues in a variety of texts.
2.develop ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesise ideas as represented in factual and fictional texts
3.develop academic skills of close analysis, critical reading and note taking
4.develop capacity for independent research
5.develop ability to construct argument in written and oral form
6.develop academic skills of referencing written work
7.develop ability to apply knowledge and critical skills in an examination setting
ContentThis course will provide teaching and discussion activities primarily on the theme of personal identity in young adults, and the significant factors which shape identity. It utilises a wide variety of Australian texts, both fiction and factual, with the central focus on a young adult novel.

The course focuses on fostering the following skills:
1. Academic writing skills including paragraphing, essay planning and writing, paraphrase, summarising and précis writing
2. Academic integrity and the process of referencing
3. Critical reading aimed at developing student capacity for deeper understanding of a variety of texts, with graded introduction to academic text types
4. Independent research skills and effective use of the university library
5. Informal oral presentation skills
6. Group discussion and study skills at a tertiary level
7. Critical thinking skills
