Earth Science 2 provides a dynamic introduction to Earth Science applications. It applies the skills and knowledge of Geology, Physical Geography and Environmental Science to the solution of problems involving Earth and its processes.

The subject matter and assessment provide for a range of learning styles. This course provides a sound basis on which to proceed to undergraduate studies in the Earth and Environmental Sciences and provides a body of knowledge and skills, complete in itself, for those planning to continue their study in other areas of Science, Technology and Education.

Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students will:

1. be able to produce written and oral work to demonstrate a level of literacy adequate for entry into undergraduate study.
2. have the ability to work independently and as part of a group.
3. demonstrate measurable analytical skills in response to texts and other stimuli.
4. demonstrate your capability to use library resources for research.
5. show competency in the use of computers for research and assignment presentation.
6. Be able to demonstrate your ability to work systematically in the laboratory and field, and show appropriate competence in practical techniques.
Content The course includes coverage of the following topics:
1. mineral resources
2. glaciation and ice ages
3. topographic and geologic maps and cross sections
4. landscape interpretation
5. local geology
6. environmental issues
7. geological catastrophes and hazards
8. engineering geology.

Examination: Formal Final examination in the University examination period, 50% Assess the student's ability to organise and write answers in a limited time, and address examination questions.
Reports Detailed report involving interpretation of geological maps and associated questions. Designed to enhance problem solving ability and integrate concepts introduced in lectures and their application to the real world. Designed to develop report writing and practice in geological analysis. 20%
