Earth Science 2 provides a dynamic introduction to Earth Science applications. It applies the skills and knowledge of Geology, Physical Geography and Environmental Science to the solution of problems involving the Earth and its processes. The subject matter and assessment provide for a range of learning styles. This course provides a sound basis on which to proceed to undergraduate studies in the Earth and Environmental Sciences and provides a body of knowledge and skills, complete in itself, for those planning to continue their study in other areas of Science, Technology and Education.

Objectives The course will:
1. encourage the production of written and oral work to demonstrate a level of literacy adequate for entry into undergraduate study.
2. help develop the ability to work independently and as part of a group.
3. develop critical analytical skills in response to texts and other stimuli.
4. develop the capability to use library resources for research.
5. develop competency in the use of computers for research and assignment presentation.
6. develop the ability to work systematically in the laboratory and field, and develop appropriate competence in practical techniques.
Content The course includes coverage of the following topics:
1. mineral resources
2. glaciation and ice ages
3. topographic and geologic maps and cross sections
4. landscape interpretation
5. local geology
6. environmental issues
7. geological catastrophes and hazards
8. engineering geology.

Essays / Written Assignments 2 x Minor Assignments, 15% each Designed to develop written skills to a level suitable for undergraduate entry. Develop critical and analytical skills. Develop competency in individual research and preparation of assignments, as well as in group interaction.
Examination: Formal Final examination in the University examination period, 50% Assess the student's ability to organise and write answers in a limited time, and address examination questions.
Reports 1 x Fieldwork Assignment, 20% Designed to enhance problem solving ability and integrate concepts introduced in lectures and their application to the real world. Develop ability to work systematically in the laboratory and field, and develop competency in practical techniques. Designed to develop group skills, report writing and practise in field analysis.

Students studying by Distance undertake a comparable virtual field assignment.
