Earth Science 1 provides a dynamic introduction to Earth Science systems. It introduces the disciplines of Geology, Physical Geography and Environmental Science and affords a better understanding of the earth and its processes. The subject matter and assessment provide for a range of learning styles. The course provides a sound basis on which to proceed to undergraduate studies in the Earth and Environmental Sciences and provides a body of knowledge and skills, complete in itself, for those planning to continue their study in other areas of Science, Technology and Education.

Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students will:

1.be able to produce written and oral work to demonstrate a level of literacy adequate for entry into undergraduate study.
2. have the ability to work independently and as part of a group.
3. demonstrate measurable analytical skills
4. demonstrate your capability to use library resources for research.
5. show competency in the use of computers for research and assignment presentation.
6. be able to demonstrate your ability to work systematically in the field, and show appropriate competence in practical techniques.
Content The course includes coverage of the following topics:
1. the Earth as a planet.
2. continental drift and plate tectonics.
3. earthquakes.
4. volcanic activity.
5. rock forming minerals.
6. igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic processes and products.
7. fossils, evolution and geological time.

Essays / Written Assignments 2 Minor Assignments, 15% each. Designed to develop written skills to a level suitable for undergraduate entry. Develop critical and analytical skills. Develop competency in individual research and preparation of assignments, as well as in group interaction.
Examination: Formal Final Examination in the University examination period, 50% Assess the student's ability to organise and write answers in a limited time, and address examination questions.
Reports Fieldwork assignment, 20% Designed to enhance problem solving ability and integrate concepts introduced in lectures and their application to the real world. Develop ability to work systematically in the laboratory and field, and develop competency in practical techniques. Designed to develop group skills, report writing and practise in field analysis.

Students studying by Distance undertake a comparable virtual field assignment.
