Introduction to the Life Sciences builds on EPCHEM137 Foundation Concepts for Chemistry and the Life Sciences and introduces concepts in the Life Sciences. Topics include the basic concepts of cell biology, anatomy and physiology: the nature and practice of biology, applications and uses of biology, the components of the cell, osmosis, homeostasis, body systems, tissues and organs, body functions and important biochemical reactions. Utilising a range of approaches, students will develop skills in observation, research and communication modes appropriate to further study in Life Sciences, Nursing, Environmental and Biological Sciences.
| Objectives | On completion of EPBIOL259 Introduction to the Life Sciences, students will demonstrate: 1. the ability to express scientific ideas in a logical, coherent fashion. 2. skills in working individually and in groups in both practical and theoretical contexts in the verbal communication of scientific ideas. 3. the acquisition of skills in researching existing theory and applying scientific method in practical contexts. 4. the ability to solve simple problems in both practical and theoretical contexts. 5. the ability to use relevant technology in support of scientific inquiry. |
