EPARTS198 Material of Music is designed to further develop the student's harmony and aural skills/knowledge gained in EPARTS197. Students will investigate both first and second inversion chords, dominant seventh chord and emphasise aural training to develop the aural ability for a basic assimilation of the elementary structures.

| Content | Harmony 1. Chord vocabulary, chord construction and voice leading. 2. The use of chords in first inversion. Chordvii/6 and its uses. Voice exchange 3. The harmonisation of simple phrases using the vocabulary covered. 4. The use of consecutive first inversion chords. The harmonisation of bass lines using root position and first inversion vocabulary. 5. The use of second inversion chords. The use of the tonic chord in second inversion. 6. The chord of the dominant seventh. The harmonisation of melody lines and bass lines using this extended vocabulary. 7. Further studies into voice-leading principles regarding the chord of the dominant seventh. Aural 1. A dual approach uses aural dictation (training to convert musical sounds into written musical notation), and sight singing (training to convert written notation into sound). 2. Intervals recognized played bottom to top as well as top to bottom. 3. Melodic notation revolves around the tonic-dominant juxtaposition. 4. Sight-singing is chiefly scalic, but with the introduction of the thirds contained within the triad. 5. Rhythm dictation will include the use of rests and ties. The introduction of compound time signatures. 6. The recognition of triads, both major and minor, in root position, first inversion and second inversion continues as an integral component of larger structures. 7. The recognition of chordal structures reflecting the harmonic idiom concurrently studied. |
