Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate
(1) an understanding of the art and form of the short story;
(2) a detailed understanding of the techniques of major writers;
(3) core skills in written and oral communication, in textual analysis and in creative practice.

A good short story often reads like a good poem, and is as difficult to write. It requires more concentration and crafting than the novella or novel. There are fewer opportunities for character development, description and plot unfolding. It requires stringent economy with words and taut control of form. Students will learn to write good short stories from studying exemplary practitioners like Anton Chekhov and Raymond Carver. They will learn to shape their work through drafts in workshops and through consultation with the tutor.

Particular attention will be paid to
* The form and structure of the short story
* Narrative strategies such as plot, setting and characterization
* Special skills and techniques of major writers
* Revising and editing
