The Rise of the Novel

This course will explore the origins and development of the English novel. Students will learn about the effect of various political, social, and economic influences on the form and content of early novels, as well as the changing conventions that accompanied the development of the novel as a genre.
| Objectives | Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: 1) Recognise early examples of the English novel and discuss its development as a genre; 2) Demonstrate skills in interpretation and analysis of contemporary literary works at intermediate undergraduate level; 3) Demonstrate the ability to communicate at intermediate undergraduate level; 4) Demonstrate skills in information literacy and use of technology to perform research; 5) Write analytic essays at intermediate undergraduate level. |
