Description

This course provides students with the opportunity to prepare for, and then undertake professional experiences in practice, in management and evaluation. Central to this professional experience is a critical reflection model that guides and highlights the students awareness regarding the role that research plays in strengthening their professional skills and knowledge. Using critical reflection students will demonstrate professional practice that optimises outcomes for people with sensory disability.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of research in the field of sensory disability

2. Plan, analyse, present and implement complex activities in their field of practice

3. Ensure improved outcomes for clients with sensory disability, by demonstrating advanced knowledge and professional practice

4. Critically evaluate their own professional practice and implement change

5. Demonstrate effective interdisciplinary team collaboration to best support the needs of clients with sensory disability

Content

Students will complete compulsory professional experience (practical or practicum) guided by a critical reflection model. This will consist of a series of supervised practical/practicm days. The structure of the professional experience will depend on the student’s professional background and their specific learning needs. The Professional Experience Coordinator will negotiate with students regarding the specific requirements of their practical/practicum experience. Generally, students are expected to experience the following:

1. The opportunity to critically analyse complex scenarios and apply research findings to inform and lead their professional practice in a variety of settings

2. The opportunity to experience debate to facilitate effective communication with peers and clients

3. The opportunity to critically reflect and act upon the implication of research and knowledge production to improve outcomes for clients with sensory disability

Requisite

This course is only available to students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies or the Master of Special Education programs.

Assumed Knowledge

It is assumed that students enrolling in this course in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing specialisation will have completed a minimum of EDUC6661, EDUC6662, EDUC6663, EDUC6664. It is assumed that students enrolling in this course in the Blind/Vision Impaired specialisation will have completed a minimum of 40 units including EDUC6668, EDUC6068, EDUC6070. It is recommended that students of the Sensory Disability specialisation complete a minimum of 40 units of coursework.

In order to pass this course, each student must complete ALL of the following compulsory requirements:

General Course Requirements:

  • Practical: Attendance Requirement - Students must attend a minimum number of these sessions. - All non-teaching students must complete 16 days of practical experience.
  • Practicum: Attendance Requirement - Students must attend a minimum number of these sessions. - Completion of 16 days practicum is a compulsory course component.

Course Assessment Requirements:

  • Essay: Pass Requirement - Students must pass this assessment item to pass the course.
  • Portfolio: Pass Requirement - Students must pass this assessment item to pass the course.

Qualified teachers in the MSpecEd (Deaf/Hard of Hearing or Blind/Vision Impaired specialisations) are required to complete 16 days of practicum.

Self-Directed Learning

Self-Directed 30 hour(s) per Term

All students of EDUC6855 are required to complete the critical reflection component of this course. Students must complete the self-reflection questionnaire before commencing professional experience (practical/practicum) days.
