This course will develop students pedagogical understanding of a variety of teaching strategies suitable for use at secondary school level. Students will examine HSIE syllabi. They will consider the rationale of the syllabi, develop lesson and unit plans suitable for a particular syllabus (using knowledge of a variety of teaching strategies introduced in this course) and gather resources that will help them to teach HSIE at the secondary school level.

Objectives To develop in students an understanding of the rationale for secondary school HSIE syllabi, and to consider a variety of teaching strategies suitable for pupils at the secondary school level and design suitable lesson and unit plans to implement those syllabi.
Content There will be a series of weekly lectures examining a broad array of teaching strategies suitable for use with pupils at the secondary school level. The lectures will examine general bases for these approaches and criteria for teacher decisions regarding their effective use.

There will be weekly tutorials conducted by a HSIE specialist. The tutorials will cover specific programming and evaluation approaches for HSIE classes.

Assessment Items
Essays / Written Assignments Students will produce approximately 5000 words or equivalent in assessment activities. There will be three assignments (two worth 30 % each and one worth 40 %) relating to the use of programming and evaluation in the HSIE classroom.

There is a computer competency requirement in this course.
