The course extends and develops concepts and learning introduced in EDUC6668 Foundations of Vision Impairment, with a particular focus on individuals and groups with complex support needs. Further development of the candidate’s knowledge and understanding of the substantial challenges for individual, family and community arising from blindness and vision impairment will occur.

Objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:
1.Provide support to vision impaired clients and their families through the ongoing clinical diagnostic process
2.Demonstrate a high level of understanding regarding complex medical conditions and vision impairment
3.Demonstrate understanding of the impact of neurological insult on the body systems
4.Communicate appropriately with clients, their families and other professionals regarding individual needs related to vision impairment.
Content Topics will include:
1. Overview of diagnosis of disability and brain injury within the medical model;
2. Characteristics of vision impairment due to neurological aetiology;
3. Characteristics of vision impairment due to adventitious aetiology;
4. Perceptions of vision impairment from clinical assessment;
5. Perceptions of vision impairment from functional perspectives;
6. Models of Australian low vision service provision.
