This course introduces students to engineering reports. In particular the course has a primary focus on the areas of communication through engineering reports as well as graphical communication in the orthogonal and pictorial area.
The course will also provide essential information about the real world of engineering, informed through an industry study as well as providing an insight into the effect of technological innovation. The exploration of issues and investigation of the nature of engineered products and systems contributes towards the students' development of the key competency solving problems. Students work as individuals and as members of groups to conduct investigations into engineered products and systems and through this, the key competencies planning and organising activities and working with others and in teams are developed.
Students focus their study from the communication and engineering report dimensions appropriate for the stage 6 NSW Engineering Studies syllabus.
| Objectives | 1. Explore the knowledge and understanding of the developments of technology and an appreciation of their influence on people and engineering practice. 2. Introduce skills used application of engineering knowledge and methodology. 3. Apply knowledge and demonstrate skills in research and problem-solving related to industry and engineering. 4. Demonstrates skills in analysis, synthesis and experimentation related to engineering. 5. Enable students to develop and use a range of specialised communication skills and techniques in the application of graphics as a tool appropriate to engineering practices. 6. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of mathematical, scientific and graphical methods to anaylse, solve problems of engineering practice. 7. Communicate using written, oral and presentation skills in the preparation of detailed engineering reports. 8. Proficiently use application software and graphics software including (CADD) computer aided design and drafting and electronic communications. 9. Integrate computer based technologies into teaching and learning activities 10. Create a teaching and learning folio containing a range of engineering resources. |

| Content | The course is divided into three modules, these modules will then be applied to the engineering applications of: household appliances, landscape products, braking systems, bioengineering, civil structures, transport systems, aeronautical applications and telecommunications. Module 1 focuses on the use of graphical communication skills to communicate when preparing detailed engineering reports. Types of graphical communication to be included are: free hand drawing, orthogonal drawing, isometic drawing, the development of tranisition pieces and an introduction to Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD). Module 2 focuses on an industry study and all of the elements of applied engineering. Module 3 focuses on the development of an engineering report. An engineering report can be developed for a new project which involves the synthesis of a new design, or it can be prepared as a result of the analysis of an existing engineering application. Engineering reports may be related to individual components, complex engineered products or engineered systems. |
