This course provides students with the opportunity to:
1. Discuss a range of epistemological approaches to education;
2. Critically reflect upon the way in which epistemology shapes educational outcomes;
3. Articulate and present a coherent philosophical response to a chosen aspect of educational epistemology; and
4. Demonstrate cogent reasoning and understanding of philosophical questioning and epistemological problems in education.

The following list indicates indicative course content:
1. Consideration will be given to the way in which a science based upon the epistemology of power conditions how we define our relationship with nature and in turn with each other.
2. Examination of the methodological principle of reductionism and the resultant shift in value orientation will be made.
3. The fragmentation of knowledge within education and pedagogic inculcation will be considered, as will questions such as:
Is there a legitimate place for religious and moral education within the current epistemolgical setting?; Is it possible to distinguish between education and indoctrination?; To extent does the technologisation of the world in which we live lead to depersonalisation, dehumanisation and desanctification?; What place, if any, is there for peace education within this framework?
