The purpose of this course is to develop students' understanding of theories of gender and the ways in which curriculum, pedagogy and school organisational practices traditionally serve to maintain dominant gender and sexuality expectations. The course highlights key debates in gender and schooling and explores pedagogies and other social practices that challenge dominant relations. It aims to alleviate gender and sexuality prejudice in schools by exploring what constitutes safe and healthy school environments.
| Objectives | This course provides students with the opportunity to: 1. develop a sophisticated understanding of key concepts, historical trends and contemporary issues related to gender and sexuality in education; 2. explore a range of social theories relating to issues of gender and sexuality in schooling; and 3. critically evaluate and apply key concepts and theories to educational "problems" framed in terms of gender and sexuality. |
