This course explores a range of perspectives from diverse social, ethnic, cultural and religious groups in Australia and encourages students to consider the implications of such diversity for educational policy and practice. The course will challenge popular views of multicultural education as the celebration of diversity and consider the role of education in yielding transformational change and combating the negative effects of stereotyping, discrimination and prejudice.
| Objectives | This course provides students with the opportunity to: 1. develop a critical understanding of key concepts related to diversity in education; 2. explore the educational implications of social, ethnic, cultural and religious diversity in schools; 3. critically evaluate the impacts of stereotyping, discrimination and prejudice in schools; and 4. apply their understanding of teaching for diversity in an educational context. |
