Educating for Peace

This course explores contemporary research into approaches to Peace Education including peacekeeping, peacemaking and peacebuilding. It explores the relationship of the Human Rights Conventions to Peace Education and the constructions of the knowledges, values and skills that underpin a peaceful school curriculum. It offers a critical examination of case studies where a peaceful pedagogy has been implemented for effective conflict resolution and contextualised peacebuilding. Pedagogical strategies to support a peacebuilding curriculum are generated.

Objectives
This course provides students with the opportunity to:
1. develop an understanding of theories and principles of Peace Education;
2. identify key Human Rights Conventions and their significance for Peace Education;
3. identify the knowledge, values and skills of peacebuilding in an educational context;
4. critically examine case studies which exemplify approaches to peacebuilding through the curriculum; and
5. develop contextualised curriculum employing peaceful pedagogy.
