Description

This course explores contemporary research into, and its implications for, the teaching, learning and assessing of historical literacy and understanding in the Primary school. It explores the purposes of history education and the key concepts that shape historical understanding (e.g., sources, evidence, explanation, interpretation, empathy); approaches to planning and programming for the K-6 component of the Australian national History curriculum (and relevant state-based courses); and ways of differentiating curriculum and instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners.

Learning Outcomes

1. discuss pedagogical trends related to the teaching and learning of History in schools;

2. develop lesson plans, teaching strategies, programs, and assessment tasks based on the Australian national History curriculum (Primary school level), that engage with the purposes of history education and the key concepts that shape historical understanding (e.g., sources, evidence, explanation, interpretation, empathy);

3. differentiate curriculum, literacy, and instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of learners in the History classroom; and

4. select, evaluate, adapt, and apply technologies and resources for teaching and assessing History.

Content

The following list indicates indicative course content:

  • The role and value of History education in contemporary society and the Australian curriculum.
  • Research findings and their implications for K-6 classroom practice (including curriculum, planning, teaching, learning and assessment).
  • Course and assessment requirements of the Australian national History curriculum (and state-based senior History courses).
  • The purposes of history education and the key concepts that shape historical understanding (e.g., sources, evidence, explanation, interpretation, empathy).
  • Differentiating curriculum and instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners in the Primary school History classroom.
  • Literacy demands and processes of historical investigation and inquiry.
  • Selection, evaluation, adaptation and application of technologies and resources for teaching and assessing History in the Primary school.

Distance students to engage in Online Learning activities for the equivalent of 3 hours per week for the full term. Course may include an optional residential school. For on-campus mode, the online learning activities may be replaced by a weekly seminar.
