This course introduces students to the research and development literature on Authentic and Productive forms of assessment. In particular, the course will outline major forms of assessment that have been identified in recent research as assisting the promotion of more intellectually challenging and relevant student learning. As part of this course, students will be introduced to recent developments in performance-based assessment and an analysis of the relationship between productive assessment and current state-based assessment procedures. In addition, the course will engage students in direct experiences of analysing their own and others' assessment practices and student work. The course will be delivered in a flexible mode combining an intensive face-to-face component with distance facilitation of student-centred learning by on-line discussion and email communication.

Objectives (1) To introduce students to Productive Pedagogy and Authentic Pedagogy models of assessment practice
(2) To help students develop of deep understanding of the pertinent research literature
(3) To assist students in the analysis of current assessment practice in educational settings
(4) To enable students to design improved assessment practices.

An introduction to and application of the development of performance-based assessments that promote intellectual quality and relevance

Essays / Written Assignments 45%): An analysis of current assessment practice based on current research literature in authentic and productive assessment (2,000 words).
Essays / Written Assignments 55%): Documentation and analysis of improved assessment practice and/or an attempt to improve assessment practice in relation to a) an analysis of prior observed practices and b) relevant research literature on performance-based and authentic forms of assessment (3,000 words).
