This course introduces students to the research and development literature on Authentic and Productive forms of pedagogy. In particular, the course will outline major dimensions of classroom practice that have been identified in recent research as contributing to greater and more equitable student learning outcomes. In addition, the course will engage students in direct experiences of analysing their own and others' classroom practice using these concepts. The course will be delivered in a flexible mode combining an intensive face-to-face component with distance facilitation of student-centred learning by on-line discussion and email communication.

Objectives (1) To introduce students to Productive Pedagogy and Authentic Pedagogy models of classroom practice
(2) To help students develop of deep understanding of the pertinent research literature
(3) To assist students in the analysis of current classroom practice in educational settings
(4) To enable students to improve their own classroom practice
Content A detailed analysis of Authentic and Productive Pedagogy models and their relationship to improved student learning outcomes

A focus on the role of Intellectual Quality and Supportive Classroom Environments in improving student learning

A introduction to, and application of, methods of classroom observation and analysis

A system of documenting improved classroom practices

a) an analysis of prior observed practices and
b) relevant research literature (1600 words).
