Orientation and Mobility for Instructors in Training

Providing an introduction to orientation and mobility (O&M) theory and the application of theory to problems relevant to practitioners of O&M who provide services to people with vision impairment. Topics covered will include: specification of O&M objectives, evaluation of ethical and legal frameworks, models of service delivery, theory and practice of O&M strategy and technique, and a comprehensive investigation and analysis of best practice in organisations providing low vision and blindness services.

ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, students will be expected to:
1. Examine and critically analyse example of best practice service delivery and duty of care approaches;
2. Identify and describe the legal and ethical obligations of O&M service delivery;
3. Use basic and advanced technology when providing O&M services;
4. Narrate the approaches required to meet the O&M needs of clients experiencing a broad range of vision impairment conditions and issues;
5. Analyse and identify appropriated programs according to the clients’ aetiology;
6. Define the concept of risk management and its importance to service delivery and client caseload management;
7. Review and critically analyse current professional literature.
ContentTopics covered will include: Duty of care and legal framework; risk management and best practice service delivery; history of the Guide Dog Association, organisation models and practices (low vision/blindness), guiding techniques and independent travel; cane skills, technology of O&M, vision aetiology and mobility, sequencing skills to meet client objectives. Critical analysis of current professional literature.
