Meeting the Academic and Social Needs of Boys

Strategies, programs and approaches for teachers and schools to enable boys to meet their academic and social needs within a positive male identity will be examined. The course will examine a range of programs and approaches that make the link between boys' social needs and their academic performance. Students will critically examine programs and approaches to the academic and social needs of boys. Programs that assist boys to develop appropriate behaviours and successful academic outcomes through a positive approach to male identity will be examined.

Objectives1. Exploring the link between academic and social needs of boys.
2. Identifying programs and approaches that address identity, relationships, self-confidence and self-esteem of boys.
3. Examining and/or developing programs within a particular school context.
4. Undertaking a small research project on designing or implementing a program within a particular school context.
Students will be asked to design and implement a program for a particular age group in a particular geographic or social location, for example for a group of rural, secondary aged Aboriginal boys, and conduct some evaluation of the program.
ContentIn the past ten years a variety of programs and approaches have been developed to assist boys of different ages to develop self awareness, self esteem, self confidence and an ability to relate to others in fair and friendly ways. Several programs will be critically examined for their applicability to different groups of boys in different contexts. Students will be expected to design a program or critique an existing program, and implement and evaluate a program with a group of boys.
