This course develops an understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles in the design and management of assessment and evaluation in TESOL. The student will learn to design and develop assessment tasks that are curriculum-focused in order to evaluate learning outcomes and to improve their teaching.

Objectives At the completion of the courses students will acquire an understanding of:
The criterion of good assessment for TESOL
The different types of testing
The techniques of testing
Content Validity of TESOL assessment devices
Reliability of TESOL assessment devices
Differences between norm referenced and criterion testing
Measurement and scaling
Statistical process for analysing testing results
Techniques in testing for skills of ESL
Test design and management
Development of curriculum outcomes-based assessment

Examination: Open Book Topic test on basic concepts: An open-book test of the basic concepts in ESL. Length as required; Weighting 20%; Due: Week 4.
Essays / Written Assignments Design of an assessment protocol: Develop a set of outcomes-based assessment items for a specific unit of work in an ESL program. Length as required; Weighting 40%; Due Week 8.
Other: (please specify) Testing analysis: Based on the previous assessment item, students are required to analyse the student learning outcomes and make constructive suggestions for future improvements in teaching and assessment of the topic. Length 2,000 words; Weighting 40%; Due Week 12.
