This course develops student understanding of the cultural elements affecting communication through English as an international language. Topics include discourse strategies depending on cultural values and misunderstanding due to the semantic difference of words and expressions. Colloqualisms, slang, and metaphores and other examples of cultural variations will also be examined.

Essays / Written Assignments Article review: Select five articles that reflect the idiosyncratic nature of the English language. This should include elements such as slang, colloqualisms and metaphores. Analyse the language used and suggest ways in which these elements could be considered in teaching and learning. Length 2,000 words;Weighting 40%; Due Week 6.
Essays / Written Assignments Program design in intercultural communication for ESL teaching: Design a unit of work for at least five lessons that teaches non-English background students to understand the target culture by selecting materials through media from English speaking countries. Length 3,000 words; Weighting 60%; Due Week 12.
