Educational Programming for stdnts with Low Vision

In this course, candidates will examine the major issues and factors to be considered in designing and implementing educational programs for students with low vision. The course will initially focus on the causes and functional implications and examination of the clinical aspects of low vision, with an introduction to the fundamentals of orthoptics. Candidates will learn about the medical and optical considerations required for educational programming for students who experience learning difficulties because of their vision impairments. Particular attention will be given to definitions, the use of terminology and the assessment of student needs. Adaptations to core and expanded core curriculum that support student opportunities for learning will be explored. Candidates will be presented with a comprehensive and systematic approach to selecting learning and literacy media and with the structured process of learning media assessment. Candidates will be introduced to a broad range of low vision devices. They will examine the rationale for their prescription and functional issues associated with their use in educational settings. A series of guest presentations made by professionals will be interwoven with intensive practical skill demonstration. This subject will be offered on campus either through the semester or in an intensive block format.

Three hour lecture/tutorial per week.

This course is administered by the RIDBC Renwick Centre. Successful completion of this course may require students to source their own textbooks and attend compulsory lecture days in Sydney. - To gain knowledge of major factors in planning an appropriate educational program for children, youth and adults with low vision.
- To acquire insights into the roles and functions of teachers who provide low vision services through school programs
- To explore and become knowledgeable about a variety of issues related to
the selection of learning and literacy media for students with low vision

Replacing Course(s) This course replaces the subject EDSD634 Applications of technology in the instruction of students with vision impairment as one of the core subjects recommended for training as a teacher of students with vision impairment.
Transition From 2002, EDSD634 will no longer be offered. Either course will make up an acceptable sequence of subjects for training as a teacher of students with vision impairment over a transition period of three years.
