Objectives This course aims to:

(a) assist students to develop an advanced level of understanding of educational audiology and its application to the education of deaf students;
(b) develop a strong theoretical and practical understanding of sensory aids to enable candidates to maximise the use of new technology by deaf children both now and in the future.
Content This course will examine assessment techniques in audiology and consider the implications of new developments in objective assessment of hearing loss. The impact of earlier diagnosis on educational support services will be examined. Testing of special populations will also be addressed. Procedures and approaches to hearing aid fitting with children will be explored in considerable depth. Topics covered in this area will include real ear measurement, the aided dynamic range audiogram, FM aids and new developments in hearing aid technology. Cochlear Implants for children will be examined in terms of new developments, issues, and their implications for educators of deaf children. Candidates will develop skills in trouble shooting and monitoring cochlear implants. Approaches to habilitation and to monitoring progress in speech perception, speech production, and language acquisition in deaf children with sensory aids will be critically examined. This process will include a review of acoustic phonetics and its application to evaluation and programming for auditory skill development.
