Introduces the socio-cultural perspective on deafness through lectures, discussions and audio-visual media.

Objectives On completion of this course, students will:

1. Compare the varying perspectives adopted when working with or describing Deaf people, with particular attention to the socio-cultural perspective.
2. Analyse the characteristics of Deaf communities and cultures.
3. Describe some of the factors that shape Deaf people's identity development.
4. Summarise key themes in the history of Deaf people, particularly the evolution of Deaf communities and their languages, and the development of edcucational beliefs and practices.
5. Describe the impact of deafness on families, and the socio-cultural factors that can affect this.
Content Candidates address topics such as the role and significance of Auslan, community empowerment, bilingualism, the contrast between the socio-cultural and deficit model of deafness (including community reaction to medical interventions), the role of technology in the lives of deaf people, and the socio-emotional issues confronting families with a deaf child. Field experience components will encourage interaction between candidates and members of the Deaf Community. The unit develops a rationale for Deaf culture and "Deaf Studies Programs" in the curriculum for deaf students and examines the current literature relating to these issues.
