Educational Audiology, Speech & Auditory Development

This course introduces students to a variety of topics central to individuals who are deaf or hearing impaired. The topics include the audiological assessment of hearing and the use of hearing aids and/or cochlear implants to minimize the effects of a hearing deficit. To understand the processes of hearing, auditory development, and speech production the anatomy and physiology of the hearing and speech mechanisms are over-viewed. Subsequently, the acoustic properties of sound and speech are related to auditory perception and the acquisition of speech. The evaluation of development of speech through oral education methods are explored in detail.
This course is administered by the RIDBC Renwick Centre. Successful completion of this course may require students to source their own textbooks and attend compulsory lecture days in Sydney. | Objectives | Upon completion of this course, students will have the capacity to: 1. Describe the basic anatomical structures and functions of the hearing and speech mechanisms. 2. Outline the relationship between anatomy and physiology and the difficulties students with hearing impairments have with developing oral speech and language skills. 3. Develop a working knowledge of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other assistive hearing technology. 4. Relate basic acoustic properties of sound and speech to oral speech and language development through listening. 5. Conduct a basic evaluation of speech using a variety of assessment instruments and techniques. 6. Identify speech goals from the basic assessment and recommend appropriate educational procedures to develop or improve speech production using oral education methods. |
