Provides an understanding of recent research and developments in learning theory. The focus lies in understanding learning from the perspective of individual differences, with an emphasis on those attributes underlying independent, strategic learning.

Objectives After successfully completing this subject, students should be able to:

1) Demonstrate an understanding of the recent research literature in learning and teaching
2) Demonstrate an understanding of how current policy on learning and teaching is related to such literature
Content Research literature will encompass major topics examining processes, content and products (outcomes) of learning and teaching including : metacognition, self-regulated learning, student self-beliefs, self-awareness, teacher beliefs and efficacy, teacher reflection, the place of practice in informing research, teaching strategies (metacognitive, cognitive, behavioural), problem solving, and their relationships to developmental levels. Students will be encouraged to pursue areas of particular interest to them within this framework.

Assessment Items
Essays / Written Assignments Assessment will be based on the equivalent of 5000 words of scholarly/academic writing. Typically, two papers of approximately 2500 words each will comprise the assessment regime.
