This course is concerned with the role of schools, museums, films, novels, websites, textbooks, and other media in the development of historical consciousness. It will explore frameworks for understanding the development of historical consciousness in children and young adults, and the part History education, political debate, and the cultural industries play in the construction or revision of public memory as an important aspect of nation building.
| Objectives | Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to: 1. Critically engage with issues in the development of historical consciousness. 2. Critically evaluate the role of schools, museums, films, novels, websites, textbooks, or other media in the construction of historical consciousness. 3. Discuss the social, cultural and political implications of history education and/or the cultural industries for nation building. |
